In Do Androids Dream of electric Sheep?, Rick Deckard is a bounty hunter who kills Androids who have escaped from other world colonies. The Rosen Corporation creates the androids to mimic humans to a point where it is hard to distinguish between the two. In Brave New World, the World State is responsible for genetically engineering humans. These “humans” do not have any of the characteristics of a modern day human. Humans are emotional creatures. When Rick is questioning Luba Loft, she accuses him of being an android by asking him, “don’t androids sometimes go around with false memories (Dick 102)?” These false memories make the androids believe that they are human, but in actuality it just makes them more artificial. The fact that a person cannot absolutely confirm that they are human lessens what it means to be human. For the androids that have been implanted, the false memories do reduce free will since the memories will heavily shape an android’s thoughts.
The people in Brave New World are very similar to the Androids because they are both essentially slaves. The androids are created to become slaves of the people on the colonies. During an advertisement for emigration, the television announcer says, “… duplicates the halcyon days of the pre-Civil War southern states! (Dick 17)” One of the incentives for going to the colonies is the entitlement to an android slave. “Halcyon” is used because the announcer wants to persuade a person to emigrate, but Dick uses it as euphemism for slavery.
